“This tune is about a moment of extreme clarity I had as a teenager after a fight that occurred at a park after dark in Haysville. I'd pissed myself slightly and ran through the woods and came upon what appeared to be a lake or body of water that hadn't been there before. I blinked and it disappeared and I was standing in an empty parking lot. But I felt like I'd seen either what that place had looked like millions of years ago, or I'd seen the way that place actually was, without the realm of illusion overlayed.” - Eric Earley of Blitzen Trapper
lyrics
I got in a fight, I was only fifteen
Standing in the park in soaking wet jeans
Eyes wide open
I could see the diamonds dancing in the leaves
I ran through the neighborhood
And down to the shore
The sea was still and silent as a starry glass floor
The ship was touching down
And all the bells were ringing all across the town
There were hundreds of thousands, millions of billions
Hungry ghosts, god’s men, lovers and villains
I stepped upon the water
Saw my daughter’s only father look me right in the eye
Right in the eye
A shadow that creeps upon your bed as you sleep
It slides along the wall and settles out in the hall
At the center of the stars a massive void that spins and calls you
Hundreds of thousands, millions of billions
Hungry ghosts, god’s men, lovers and villains
I stepped upon the water
Saw my daughter’s only father look me right in the eye
Right in the eye
I got in a fight, I was only fifteen
Standing in the park in soaking wet jeans
Eyes wide open
I could see the diamonds dancing in the leaves

I have been out of the Wilco loop for a while now, but this album has pulled me back in. I adore it. Tweedy and co. know how to write gentle, heartfelt songs while adding just the right amount of unusual synth additions. The second half of the record ends INCREDIBLY strongly. If you've been out of Wilco for a while like me, check it out. BobandoCommando
